A few days ago we talked about the best adventures to have in the United States. All sorts of adventures, because we think that escaping the ordinary is a fundamental part of the life of each one of us and a very important thing to do in order to open one’s mind and grow both as a person, and as an adventurer.
Escaping the ordinary is what makes us appreciate the ordinary even more and what gets us in contact with new ways of living, thinking and, of course, adventuring. After all, the world has never been more accessible and adventure travels are becoming more affordable and easier to organize, thanks to the many means and information that people can use to make them happen.
So after seeing what are the best adventures you can have in the US, we think it is time to widen the angle a little bit and go global. What about the rest of the planet? What are the best adventures to have in the World? What are the most beautiful places to visit in the world and which are the most amazing activities you can do?
We at Apache Pine put together a little list for you. Here are some ideas: get ready to pack...adventure is waiting for you!
The greatest adventures in the world
That of the Himalayas is the highest, greatest mountain chain in the world. There’s nothing like it anywhere else on this planet. To experience it, you don’t necessarily have to be an alpinist and reach the top of Mount Everest. Here trekkers can have the adventure of a lifetime too.
Two are the adventures we feel like suggesting: one is in the East of the chain, the Goecha La trek, the other one in the West, the Ladakh one.
They both are though treks, that require stamina and that will lead you to very high altitudes. In the case of the first one, the trail will take you all the way to the Goecha La Pass, at 16,400 ft, from where you can admire the sun rising over Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world. The beauty of this moment will take your breath away and in general the whole experience will be a true adventure.
In the case of Ladakh, beauty will not be any less. After an acclimatization in the capital, Leh, at 11,500 ft, surrounded by an astonishing mountain desert, you will set off for a trek that will take you all the way to Stok Kangri base camp, at 20,200 ft, to get ready for a night climb, which will allow you to reach the summit just in time to admire one of the most spectacular sunrises you will ever see in your whole life.
Does it sound adventurous enough?
The Australian Outback
Let’s change the landscape completely: the Australian Outback is one of the last frontiers of our age. Dry, mostly inhabited and characterized by very harsh conditions, this adventure destination is soaked with ancient tradition and unforgettable experiences. What’s the best adventure to have in the Australian Outback? The walkabout. The indigenous Aboriginal people still honor the ancient tradition of the walkabout as a coming of age ritual, during which a young man or woman becomes an adult. This is a tradition that’s been going on for centuries and that you might want to experience yourself.
You will be wondering around and surviving in one of the most beautiful and unspoiled places on Earth, and if you don’t feel like doing this experience all by yourself, you can still join group excursions. You can choose to spend “walkabouting” a few days or a few weeks, opting for the right route for you, whether it’s a trek on the amazing Australian Alps or a hike through the charming Red Center. Regardless, it’s an experience that you will never forget.
The Arctic is seen by many as one of the ultimate adventures in the world. And this is true, especially if it will allow you to see one of the most beautiful animals there are in our ecosystem: the polar bear. In the Island of Spitsbergen, in the heart of the Arctic continent, polar bears can be spotted and admired in their natural environment, together with a variety of other wildlife, such as walruses, seabirds and beluga whales.
For those who love wild animals, this most definitely is the ultimate adventure. It will also be a great way to get to know better what is happening right now in the Arctic, and how endangered polar bears and the arctic wildlife in general are.
Indeed, if things don’t change, you might be one of the last adventurers to witness such an incredible spectacle, as in less than a century it will all be gone. Going on adventures is not just amazing, but also useful to realize what is the actual condition of our planet and what we can do to help it.
If you want to help, you might want to look into volunteering experiences that will allow you to merge your adventuring time with your wish to do something.
The Lost World of Venezuela
Lost World is a classic adventure novel by Conan Doyle. It is set in Venezuela exactly and, more precisely, in the amazing area of the Angel Falls.
If mysterious jungles, rolling grasslands, immense tepuis and a “lost” atmospheres are what you are looking for your adventure, then this is the answer for you.
Indeed, Angel Falls is the world highest waterfall, plunging 3,200 ft and allowing one of the most incredible spectacles ever. In this region of Venezuela you will be able to trek to the summit of Mount Roraima and admire all its beautiful plants and rare carnivorous frogs, or visit Auyàn-tepui to see the Angel Falls exactly.
From the Atacama Desert to Patagonia
South America in general is full of incredible adventures. Not just Venezuela, but the whole continent is filled with hidden, adventurous gems. Its incredibly wild nature and its absolutely stunning sceneries, as well as the remoteness of some destinations really make it the land of ultimate experiences.
An example could be the Atacama Desert, one of the most famous deserts in the world, which will allow you to have a real beyond-space kind of adventure. Indeed, both NASA and National Geographic stated that here you can find soil comparable to that of Mars, to the point that you will find yourself walking about the set of Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets.
And what about Patagonia, the most remote land of all times? There’s nothing southerner than Patagonia (besides the Antarctic of course) and here you will really be able to experience what it’s like to visit the borders of Earth. Here you will be able to meet some of the most unusual and rare animals that populate our planet, as well as people who still live by ancient traditions.
Patagonia really is the land of opposites, and you can discover them even on two wheels. Indeed, for those who like cycling or motorbiking, the Carretera Austral will allow you to reach this place in an even more adventurous way.
The Trans-Mongolian Express
From Russia to China, passing through Mongolia, this train will take you through a breathtaking journey across places and history. The trip will last 21 days (one way) and you can either go from Russia to China, or the other way around. Regardless, the lands you will cross are incredibly fascinating and remote, and you will be able to set eyes and foot in places that few other people have seen or been to.
And of course, all the greatest landmarks are going to be there, from the Great Wall of China, to Tiananmen Square, as well as St. Basil’s Cathedral, the Red Square and so on. Mongolia’s Gobi Desert will delight you with its natural beauty, as well as the forests of Terelj National Park.
Long story short, it will really be a mesmerizing train ride and an adventure travel that really should be on your wish list.
Kenya and the Big Five
Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Lion and Leopard: these are the animals that Africans refer to as the Big Five. Sacred and in some cases even endangered, these beautiful kings and queens can be admired all in one place: Kenya.
Get ready for an incredible exploration, and if you are thinking about the classic safari, then we are sorry to tell you that you are wrong! What we want to suggest is a safari, indeed, but a horseback one, during which you will be able to visit the bushes in a more tranquil way and get closer to the wildlife.
Indeed, while jeeps and big crowds are perceived as incredibly noisy and very scary by many animals, horses don’t have the same effects on them, allowing you to not scare them away.
Of course, you are still going to be an intruder, so you must be cautious and stick to some safety rules. However, you will truly feel part of the environment and you will get to experience it like never before.
Thru-hiking the Dolomites
Sure, the United States has some of the most amazing, longest thru-hikes in the world. We often talked about the Appalachian Trail, the Continental Divide or the Pacific Crest. However, the Alps don’t joke when it comes to beautiful, long hikes, especially when talking about the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of their incredibly peculiar geological formation.
Indeed, the Dolomites used to be below the surface of the ocean and emerged only after a very long time, during the formation of the surface of the Earth as we know it today. Thus, when hiking through these mountains, what you will come across is not just some stunning landscapes, but incredible fossils of corals and shells, and many proofs of that underwater “previous life”.
In the Dolomites, as well as in the Alps in general, there are many long hikes. They are called Alte Vie, High Routes. The longest one is more than 200 km long and they will all get you through some of the most incredible panoramas you will ever see. Visit one of the meccas for mountain lovers and experience an unforgettable backpacking adventure.
Iceland most definitely is the land of charm, beauty, pristine nature and unforgettable adventures. It is a big volcanic island, characterized for the exact same reason by a very fervid underground geothermal activity. This creates some of the most amazing and famous natural hot springs in the world.
These natural hot springs originate from the collision of 176 °F hot water coming from underground and the ice-cold water that flows in the surface, creating one of the most evocative natural shows there are. In fact, you shall keep in mind that Iceland is part of the Arctic lands and that what surrounds these more than 800 hot springs is an arctic landscape, with all its game of oppositions and contrasts.
Of course, Iceland is not just hot springs, but beautiful trails, lots of free camping and stunning cliffs too. The best of adventures would be to rent a van and drive through the island, sleeping with some amazing glances out of the window and enjoying the life on this charming road.
Rock climbing in New Zealand
When talking about rock climbing, New Zealand isn’t always the first place that comes to one’s mind. Which is a shame, because this incredible island at the end of the world really has a paradise of rock to offer to those who wish to reach its far lands. Indeed, a string of stunning mountain peaks reaches NZ’s South Island, creating a real playground for climbers of all levels.
Indeed, it doesn’t matter if you are an expert climber or if you are going to try it for the first time during this adventure: guides will be there to help you and show you the way...and the route!
And of course, the great thing about New Zealand is that, besides rock climbing, it has some other breathtaking natural attractions and places to visit, becoming one of the perfect destinations for those who are after vast landscapes, miles and miles of trails and unspoiled nature.
